Issuance Context: These notes were first issued on November 1, 1944, as a response to a tin shortage caused by Allied air and sea control, making it difficult to produce the previously used 10 sen coins.
Design Features: The obverse (front) of the note features the "Peace Tower" (now known as the Heiwa no Tō or Tower of Peace) located in Heiwadai Park in Miyazaki, Japan, with the chrysanthemum flower (imperial seal) at the top.
Historical Significance: The "Peace Tower" was originally known as the Hakkō Ichiu Tower, reflecting the controversial wartime slogan "Hakkō ichiu" meaning "all the world under one roof," which was associated with Japan's imperialistic ambitions during WWII.
Status Today: This denomination, along with other subsidiary notes and coins of less than 1 yen, was demonetized at the end of 1953 due to post-war inflation and is now primarily a collector's item.
