This is a darling set of vintage chalkware bookends made by Universal Statuary Company in Chicago. The pair features a charming Asian couple motif styled in rich shades of cream and gold with black accents, capturing a graceful mid-century aesthetic. These pieces are in great vintage condition with no damage other than a few tiny missing paint spots, which is especially rare for chalkware of this age. Both bookends are clearly marked “1952 @ CHICAGO UNIVERSAL STATUARY CO.” on the inner edge and again at the base of each figure’s garment on the back.
