This vintage (c. 1930s-1940s) Yellow Casqued Hornbill statue was hand-crafted by an anonymous Senufo sculptor from Ivory Coast. The statue is in excellent condition and a powerful sight to behold. This piece was not intended for ritual use, but either home display or for the tourist souvenir market.

Sculptures of the hornbill are collectively called Sejen amongst the Senufo. These type of initiation figures are also called kporpyan, which means literally 'mother of the Poro child'. The statue is thus a primary symbol of the Poro leadership, indicating the authority of its elders.

The native Yellow Casqued Hornbill is said to be the chief of assertive birds and associated with intellectual power, symbolizing the transfer of knowledge from the elders to the young initiates.
