Historical Context & Purpose This coin was an attempt by the Hong Kong Mint to create a unified national currency for the Chinese Empire, commissioned by the Central Government in Peking in 1867, as Shanghai lacked modern minting facilities.
Design & Rejection The coin features the British Crown, Coat of Arms of England, Scotland, and Ireland, and the Collar of the Garter on the obverse, with a Latin motto "HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE". The reverse depicts an imperial dragon. The design, however, was ultimately rejected by the Qing government due to its overt British symbolism, considered politically sensitive after the Opium Wars.
Rarity & Status Only pattern strikes were produced, and most were melted down after the design's rejection and the subsequent closure of the Hong Kong Mint in 1868, making surviving examples exceptionally rare and highly sought after by collectors.
