These coins were a central part of the bimetallic monetary system of the Qing Dynasty, which utilized both copper and silver coinage.
The square hole in the center allowed for the coins to be strung together for easier carrying and counting.
While initially cast, the later Qing Dynasty saw the introduction of machine-struck copper coins, like the Great Qing Copper Coin, intended to modernize the currency system.
The inscription on the coin often identifies the reigning emperor and sometimes includes minting information in Manchu script.
Qing Dynasty coins, especially rare varieties, are of interest to collectors due to their historical significance as relics of China's last imperial dynasty.
