You load a cassette tape in the player. The cassette reads the book and tells your child when to turn the page. There's no cable w/ the unit so I could not test it w/ electricity. I did test the unit with batteries and it did not work. It had worked the last time it was tried previously. Hopefully someone that is handy with electronics can fix it or maybe it could be used for parts. Price reflects issues.
