Tiny pieces of handmade, handcut glass in vibrant blues & yellow, & rich green, within a white border create a beautiful floral mosaic that showcases hundreds of years of practice & workmanship.
Florentine mosaic pillboxes such as these are made in Florence, Italy. Artisans craft these exquisite pieces using traditional Florentine techniques, which involve cutting thin slices of Murano glass & individually placing each piece. Each thread of brightly colored enameled glass is cut & added to form the distinctive designs.
The art & technique of Byzantine mosaics have not changed since the beginning of the 5th century in Ravenna, Italy. The process resumed & flourished again in the 19th century in Florence. A diminishing number of expert craftpersons each generation limits the number of pieces currently produced.
