“Imaginative realist painter Gerhard Miller (1903–2003) first divulged his interest in art when he contracted polio at 12. He lost the ability to walk and, to pass the time, taught himself painting by studying books and visiting museums. After multiple surgeries and hours of PT, Miller regained the ability to walk. Determined to pursue his artistic interests, everyday he dedicated an hour in the morning, a half hour during the day, and a few hours in at night. When he began exploring painting, he started with oil, but by 1938 he turned to watercolor. In 1958, he opened a gallery in his home. Egg tempera became his favored medium for larger paintings. His paintings often feature the landscape of Door County created in the imaginative realist style. He started with a sketch created on location, but never painted in plein air.”
