A beautiful vintage hand made Mexican Folk Art paper-maché or cartoneria. The old woman, wearing a colorful skirt, is carrying three baskets, one filled with beans. Her thoughtful face is adorned with gentle wrinkles.
The materials used in this piece are wood, paper maché, twine, and clay. In an excellent vintage condition, this piece is 11” tall, including the wooden base.
Cartonería or papier-mâché sculptures are a traditional handcraft in Mexico. The papier-mâché works are also called "carton piedra" (rock cardboard) for the rigidness of the final product.
