Antique clear glass doorknob with brass base. The clear glass has turned "sun purple" or "sun colored amethyst", developing its purple tint due to prolonged exposure to sunlight.
Before 1915, manganese dioxide was commonly added to glass as a decolorizer to counteract the greenish tint caused by iron impurities.
When glass containing manganese is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun over an extended period, the manganese undergoes a photochemical reaction, causing the glass to turn various shades of pink or purple, a process known as solarization. The last two photos are under 365 nm uv light, showing the green color from the manganese.
There are some chips in the glass and age wear.
