A rare and theatrical bronze oil lamp that blurs the line between function and fantasy. This curious creation features a bird—interpreted as either a pelican or swan—dramatically piercing its own breast, its back morphing into a pair of expressive theatrical masks. The base is cast as an integral oval plinth, with yet another grotesque mask carved in relief on its underside. The entire piece is cloaked in a rich, time-worn patina that enhances its eerie charm.
Not just a conversation piece, this form is known in several historic examples and has often been attributed to the School of Riccio, a connection made stronger by a nearly identical lamp housed in the Galleria Estense in Modena. That particular version includes a female head thought to be inspired by Riccio della Torre’s tomb in Verona (as noted by Krahn, op. cit.).
A truly unique object steeped in mystery, history, and macabre artistry—perfect for collectors of Renaissance bronzes, theatrical décor, or the wonderfully weird.
