Sarah J. Hale (1788–1879) was a prominent American writer and editor, best known as the long-time editor of Godey's Lady's Book and as the author of "Mary Had a Little Lamb." She was a major advocate for women's education and for the national Thanksgiving holiday.
This elegant engraving shows her seated, wearing a lace bonnet and dark shawl, with a delicate, calm expression. Below her portrait is her facsimile signature: "Truly yr friend, Sarah J. Hale."
Condition:
Good antique condition, with some typical age-related toning and scattered foxing (see photos). The image remains crisp and the signature is clear.
