Horsehair pottery signed by Master Potter Kevin Matthews 2016. Measures approximately 9” x 8.5”. Shallow square dish.
Legend has it that horsehair pottery was created accidentally when long hair from a native American Potter, who was removing a piece of pottery from a hot kiln, fell onto a hot pot, leaving behind an interesting carbonized design. While , typically horsehair is used, it is possible to use hair from dogs, cats, humans, and even feathers from birds. Horsehair pottery is not functional because of its porous quality. There is also no glaze applied to Kevin Mathews horsehair pottery. It is only for decorative use. Never pour liquids into horsehair pottery or use it for eating food off of. Beautiful unique piece.
